ANDREY KOLBASIN / LOS ANGELES

Full Leg Tattoos in Los Angeles

I'm Andrey Kolbasin, a tattoo artist based in Los Angeles. I specialize in realism, portraits, and large-scale custom tattoo projects, including compositions designed for the leg.

A full leg tattoo gives me the space to develop an entire composition rather than work with a series of disconnected images.

The thigh, knee, calf, and lower leg all have different shapes. I design with those changes in mind, so the artwork feels connected as it moves around the body.

01 / PORTFOLIO

Full Leg Tattoo Portfolio

Here you can explore examples of my large-scale tattoo work, selected to show different approaches to composition, realistic detail, contrast, and color.

Each leg has its own proportions, and each project needs to respond to the placement. A composition can wrap around the thigh, extend along the calf, or connect several areas into a more ambitious design.

I prefer to plan the complete direction at the beginning, even when the work will be completed over multiple sessions.

02 / MY APPROACH

Designing Around the Leg

A leg isn't a flat surface, and a full leg tattoo shouldn't be designed as if it were one long poster.

The upper thigh gives me a relatively broad area for important subjects. The calf introduces a different curve, while the knee creates a transition that needs particular attention.

I consider how the design will look while standing, walking, and turning. The focal points need to feel balanced, not only in one carefully posed photograph.

Sometimes this means adjusting the size of a portrait, changing the position of an important subject, or simplifying a background. The goal is a composition that belongs on the body.

01 / PLACEMENT

Thigh

A larger surface for important subjects, portraits, and detailed focal points that need room.

02 / TRANSITIONS

Knee

A moving joint that needs thoughtful transitions between the upper and lower leg.

03 / FLOW

Calf & Shin

Long, curved areas where background, lighting, and proportions can connect the overall composition.

03 / COMPOSITION

One Design, Not Separate Tattoos

I prefer approaching a full leg as one complete project. Individual subjects can be different, but they need to belong to the same composition.

A realistic portrait might become the main focal point, while landscapes, architectural elements, patterns, or atmospheric details help connect the surrounding areas.

I pay attention to where the strongest contrasts belong, how dark and light areas move, and which sections should remain visually quieter.

I don't want every part of the leg fighting for attention. A strong design should be understandable as a whole, then reveal more detail when someone looks closer.

04 / STYLE & DIRECTION

Color Realism and Black and Grey

I work in both color realism and black and grey. The choice depends on the concept, lighting, atmosphere, and the way I want the main subjects to stand out.

Black and grey works particularly well for sculptural forms, portraits, dramatic lighting, architecture, and compositions built around depth and contrast.

Color offers different possibilities. It can help separate elements, create vivid focal points, and introduce a specific mood into a realistic composition.

Neither approach is automatically better for a leg sleeve. I prefer to choose a direction that makes sense for the entire design rather than add color or complexity without a reason.

05 / LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS

Full Leg Tattoos vs. Individual Pieces

A single tattoo on the thigh or calf can be a substantial project on its own. But planning to cover most or all of the leg is a different challenge.

I need to consider the relationship between several anatomical areas from the beginning. Even if the project starts on the upper leg, the design can be planned to continue toward the knee, calf, and lower leg.

This helps avoid the situation where individual pieces look good separately but become difficult to connect later.

If you already have tattoos on your leg, send me clear photographs. I'll need to understand their placement, contrast, and available space before discussing how a new composition might work.

06 / PROJECT PLANNING

How I Plan a Full Leg Tattoo

A full leg tattoo requires more than choosing several reference images. I want to understand the overall idea and how much of the leg you want to cover.

From there, we can discuss the main subjects, the placement, color direction, and how the project will develop across multiple full-day appointments.

01

Tell Me About Your Idea

Send me your concept, visual references, and photographs of the area you want tattooed. Include existing tattoos if there are any.

02

Choose the Visual Direction

We discuss the main subjects, realistic detail, color or black and grey, and the overall mood of the design.

03

Build the Composition

I plan how the important elements fit the anatomy, where the focal points belong, and how the individual sections will connect.

04

Plan the Tattoo Sessions

We discuss the estimated scope of the project and the sequence of full-day appointments, allowing appropriate healing time between sessions.

05

Develop the Complete Piece

The tattoo takes shape across multiple appointments. I evaluate the composition as the work progresses, keeping the final result in mind.

07 / SESSIONS & TIME

How Many Sessions Does a Full Leg Tattoo Take?

A full leg tattoo is a multi-session commitment. The number of appointments depends on how much of the leg we cover, the complexity of the composition, and the amount of detail.

I work in full-day sessions lasting six hours. I don't offer half-day appointments.

The actual progress during each session can vary with placement, skin, level of detail, and whether we're working in color or black and grey.

Because leg projects differ so much in size and structure, I prefer not to promise a fixed number of sessions before reviewing your idea. During the consultation, I can give you a more useful estimate for the project.

A deposit is required to reserve your appointment. You can find more information about the booking process on my FAQ page.

08 / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Full Leg Tattoo FAQ

Do you design complete leg sleeves?

Yes. I work on large custom compositions and can plan a tattoo across the thigh, knee, calf, and lower leg. The design depends on the subject and the area you want covered.

Can I choose color or black and grey?

Yes. I work in both styles. We can choose the direction based on the subject, lighting, atmosphere, and overall composition.

How many appointments does a full leg tattoo require?

It depends on the exact coverage, the complexity and the level of detail. I work in six-hour full-day appointments and provide estimates after reviewing the project.

Can the design extend across the knee?

Yes. The knee can be part of a connected leg composition. Its movement and shape require careful placement and transitions between the surrounding areas.

Can you incorporate tattoos I already have?

Sometimes. I need to review photographs of the existing tattoos, their size, location, density, and the surrounding available space. Some projects may require a different composition or a cover-up approach.

How should I prepare for a full-day tattoo session?

Get enough sleep, eat before your appointment, stay hydrated, and wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the tattoo area. I'll provide aftercare guidance for your project.

Is the initial consultation free?

Yes. My initial consultation is free. It gives us a chance to discuss the concept, placement, scale, timing, and possible next steps.
